Planning a North Shore snowmobile trip

A good North Shore snowmobile trip takes planning. The distances are big, services spread out, and the weather has the last word. Here are the pieces to put in place so it all runs smoothly.

Pick your dates and sector

Decide when and where first. January-February for reliability, the north for a longer season. A sector near Baie-Comeau for a first trip, the Route blanche or Fermont for a real expedition.

The access pass and paperwork

Sort your trail-access pass, registration and insurance before you leave. For a visitor, the temporary pass is usually the right call.

Fuel, lodging, resupply

Map the rest stops and fuel points on your route, because they thin out fast outside towns. Book your lodging ahead in high season. A turnkey package handles lodging, the garage and logistics in one go.

Safety

Never ride alone in isolated country, tell someone where you're going, carry enough to survive a breakdown, and check live conditions the morning of. The North Shore is beautiful and demanding at once.
